Tromso

Early morning flight from Lofoten to Tromso. The Leknes airport staff did a really thorough check of our carry on bags. They were asking us about our go-pro stick, our drone, our gimbal. It was a nice short flight and we reached Tromso pretty early. Took a cab from airport to hotel as it seems like the price difference between cab and airport bus for 2 pax is minimal. I was really impressed with underground tunnels with junction circles!

The hotel is new, modern, clean, beautiful and located right beside the water. They allowed us to check in early and we even got a room upgrade and was given a unit on the top floor as they were having a rave party by a famous spotify DJ in their ballroom. Seems like they like to party a lot :)

Our stay in Tromso was for 5 days 4 nights as we wanted to maximize the chances of finding aurora this trip. We came to Tromso to look for this company called Chasing Light. We read that they are really dedicated to finding the chances of seeing the northern lights. They can drive up to as far as the Finland borders just to have a chance of clear skies. Moreover one of the co-founder is a Singaporean, which is all the more, we really wanted to support them.

Our guide would also advise us how to shoot the northern lights.
I followed the GoPro settings i found online, and made some tweaks to it with our guide's guidance.
You can see it's late in the evening, with some hints of the blue sky.

We paid about S$2151.76 for the whole package which includes our hotel accomodation (Clarion Hotel the Edge), daily hotel breakfast, 2 nights of Northern Light viewings driven in a comfortable-big-window-Mercedes van + soup dinner + campfire + photo-taking for us. We received all photos and sometimes videos immediately that night itself few hours after the tour ends. The tours can start around evening time and last all the way till 3 or 4am, depending on how far we travel. They can supply a hot thermal "space" suit too if you're feeling too cold. We think that it's a really good deal, so we could really relax our time in Tromso and leave everything to the experts.

These are my own shots using GoPro during the tour. You'd need a tripod for these kind of shots.

We walked around the neighbourhood and explored. The first kebab shop that we went to didn't want to serve even just a few minutes before noon opening.

Went to another nicer shop. Left drone below table when we left. Lucky the honest staff kept it and returned to me when I ran back! Two kebabs and 1 coke cost us S$46.10
Food is really costly but it comes in big servings so that was our brunch settled.

These are obviously taken by our guide with his dslr.
TIP: Do request for certain styles that you'd like, but please do not hog your guide for being your personal photographer.

We sat on reindeer fur, which i wasn't comfortable with but it's better than sitting on soil for our campfire.
TIP: The fire was really needed to keep warm, but please wear clothes and bring bags that you don't mind having smoked smell on.

Our first night with Chasing Lights and it was a blast! The whole night was just exploding with all sorts of shapes and colours. Every inch of the skies were filled with dancing auroras. You can see them moving freely, and vividly even without the camera. (In iceland we couldn't see the aurora with our naked eye, but the camera could capture it)

For our second night, it was raining the whole day, so we didn't have any hopes for seeing the northern night. But our guide was so determined, we drove and drove, chasing for any chance for clear skies, even if it's just a gap, we can see the Green Lady dance. She did find it in the end, it was kind of faint and weak, not dancing, but we really appreciate her hard work and attitude, it was amazing.
I was trying not to drink too much water, or soup or hot chocolate that was provided during the tour, as i KNOW i'll need the toilet. There are clean toilet breaks, but not often, you can do it in the wild though.

Our remaining time in Tromso, we walked from our hotel, across a long bridge to the Arctic Cathedral. It's so beautiful. We even walked up to a cable car station but we left as it was kind of costly and the sun was already setting by the time we walked there.
